Snow Day

December 19th, 2008

It never fails. At least once a year the snow starts pounding on the city in the middle of a work day. Today is that day and therefore my office closed at 2:00. I am now home and Tom is on his way. Once home safely snow days aren’t so bad. Snug in the house, wrapping gifts, writing cards, maybe a couple rounds of backgammon. I have the fixings for a hot breakfast and with a handful of bars up the street the night ahead could be fun!

My attempt to add cute picture of dog in snow has failed. Will try again when my computer guy husband gets home.

That’s not my coat.

December 4th, 2008

My girlfriends and I went to a show* tonight. It started at 7:30 so after work we went for a couple of drinks to pass the time, that and we like going out for drinks, when I overheard this conversation:

A woman asks the bartender for a napkin with soda water on it because her friend spilled her martini on her own coat. To which the friend responds, “That’s not my coat.”

No, no it wasn’t her coat. IT WAS MINE. So I took it off the back of the chair and slinked it across my lap. The women who spilled the drink disappears into the crowd and the woman with the soda water asks for the coat back because she works with fabrics and explained to me how I could fix it when I got home. “It’s the lining of a wool coat, or what I assume is wool.” Bitch. Give me my coat. I have another bar to hit before the show.

Show was fun**. Goodnight.

* Yes, we went to the Pay What You Will showing. What can I say? I like a bargain.
**Ten dollars - that we paid for the tickets - fun.

Happy Legally Thanksgiving Blonde Day

November 28th, 2008

A few days ago Tom and I were driving in the car together, as we often do, when Tom turned to me and asked, “do you want to go see Legally Blonde at Proctor’s Theater?” That came out of no where. So I asked if he had won tickets or something. Why else would he want to go to the theater? Come to find out, he just thought it would be a nice thing to do together.

Since our plans were to stay home this year finding tickets for Thanksgiving evening was perfect. What made it even better? They were half price.

So after dinner we headed out to the show. And it was so much fun…definitely got a round of snaps from us. And for a charitable donation I had my picture taken with this little nugget…the UPS guy*!

In the morning Tom is back to work and I am headed to see my parents and do a little a lot of shopping at Lord & Taylor (in that order of course).

A few of my favorite things…

November 22nd, 2008

No, this isn’t a Christmas wish list. Just a little post to mention the things I am totally digging right now…

Cardona’s Market. It’s a green olive heaven. We stopped in tonight for meatballs and I walked out with a variety of deliciously stuffed green olives. They totally kicked the supermarkets green olive’s asses!

Coccadott’s Cake Shop. Seriously I have to stop driving down Central Ave. My car automatically swoops into their parking lot. I now bring a cake with me everywhere. Cocktails at 5:00, no problem I’ll bring the cake. Dinner party at 7? Count me and a cake in. Saturday night with nothing to do? How about a cake with that post? A guy friend of mine called today for directions to Coccadott’s. “Two doors down from the strip club” I said. He found it, no problem. I’ll be having some of the cake he ordered on Tuesday. Counting down the minutes.

And speaking of giving directions for cake. Liz Lemon’s rambling on where to find cupcake’s in New York City this week on 30 Rock was the funniest think ever! “McEnroe, give me a break, I’m on it.” and “Also, don’t over think it, Sara Lee frozen, unbelievable.” How did I miss the first two season of that show?

Another one of my favorite things is our warm house. Nothing a little insulation and new furnace couldn’t fix. We also threw in an on-demand tankless hot water heater. I used to get out of the shower when the hot water ran out, now I am tempted to stay in there for days! The best part about it, between the National Grid and NYSERDA rebates the hot water heater paid for itself instantly! It’s good to be green.

I’ve also been enjoying Tuesday night PiYo and pancakes. Not at the same time, though I may be on to something here.

Caller Three

October 7th, 2008

Our local radio station is running a contest to win Madonna tickets. I have officially become that guy in the movie One Crazy Summer who sits by the phone all summer long waiting for the damn jingle. I’ve heard the jingle, I’ve called the radio station, and I’ve been caller three - twice. All the other attempts have been greeted with a busy signal or infinite ringing. Yesterday I could sense the jingle was coming so I had my cell phone ready to go, number programmed, keypad unlocked, thumb on the talk button and then I dropped my phone. The battery popped out and as I was searching for it on the floor of my car there was the jingle.

Funny thing is, I didn’t even want to go to the concert this year. I really don’t need another half hour of Madonna playing classical guitar during La Isla Bonita. No offense Madge. But ever since the contest started all I want is to be caller ten…not caller three.

Jump…Jump…

October 4th, 2008

Tom bought a jump rope today. It’s one of the secret weapons he has in his arsenal to win his office fitness challenge. We went to the backyard and he gave it a couple of twirls, even threw in a little fancy footwork. I rolled my eyes and said give me that thing. Well that was embarrassing. My complete inability to jump rope. What? Was I never 10 before? Tom took the rope back, gave me a couple of pointers, and continued his jumping and his feet shuffling and his showing off. Err.

Anyway, good luck during the challenge. You’re off to a good start…you rope jumper you.

Ooh la la!

September 13th, 2008

Montreal in September is magnifique. And so are Tom’s language skills. I took four years of french in high school, minored in spanish in college, went to a language school in Mexico and took conversational italian. Can’t speak a lick. Tom on the other hand can practically hold conversations in all of these and never studied a single one. First five minutes in Montreal and he is translating traffic signs. “Babe, only taxis are allowed down that street so turn here.” Not fair.

Just a couple hours in the car, et voila, everyone speaks french. I was totally nervous that I would get a good dose of attitude by the locals because I don’t speak french. But that totally never happened. They have a little language switch in their head that goes from Bonjour to Hello quite kindly. I want that switch.

Our trip was fabulous in the site seeing, map holding, touristy kind of way (as opposed to the whoo hoo we can drink at 18 kind of way). And, oh the places we walked…Old Montreal, Chinatown, Parc Jean Drapeau, Biodome, Olympic Stadium, Little Italy, The Village, Latin Quarter, Underground Pedestrian Network, Downtown (Rue St. Catherine, Rue Crescent, Rue Sherbrooke), Museum of Fine Arts for the Yves St. Laurent Exhibit (A-MA-ZING) & Greene Street. Of course we hopped on the Metro here and there. At one stop I lost our remaining tickets and Tom, with his multi-language skills, simply said, “c’est la vie.”

Montreal, mon ami, we will see you again.

And I thought 30 miles was tough…

September 2nd, 2008

See that MS link over to the right? Click on it. Admire how beautiful my brother’s family is, then give a buck or two. K?

On September 13th and 14th my brother, Ski, will be riding in the MS 150 to raise money to fight MS. It’s 60 miles per day for both days. September 13th is also his and his wife’s 11th wedding anniversary and their four year old’s first soccer game. Kinda puts my weekend of catching up on Chelsea Lately episodes to shame.

Ski is almost at his goal of raising $2,000 so please visit his website to make a donation - go ahead, he asked nicely.
