[...] So, tonight is a celebration: my wife got her PhD in Molecular Medicine earlier this week. We went out for dinner tonight to celebrate. I usually drink Maker’s Mark on the rocks, but tonight I was feeling a little frisky when we got to Bernini’s (plus I have a bottle of the Mark at home…no need to pay bar prices for it). I started with a Knob Creek Manhattan that was absolutely perfect: it had just the right amount of sweet vermouth, the glass was chilled to perfection, and the cherry was scrumptious…for $9.50, it better be perfect! We ate dinner, drank some wine, and when we got home, my neighbor and I cracked open a bottle of Wild Turkey Rare Breed that I got as a gift for helping my friend Vish with his computer troubles. Well, I smelled it, took it in, and it was powerful. I’m no stranger to the high-test…Hell, for a 9 month period in ‘04, I drank nothing but the 101. But this was something different. Yeah, it smelled strong (I mean, like turpentine strong), but it had a sweetness to it that smelled like a melted caramel. I took in its scent, and braced myself for it to scorch my throat. It didn’t. As I drank it, I could taste the oak barrels, and it had a spice-like nutmeggy (if that’s a word) aftertaste that was so delicious, I can still taste it an hour after my last sip. All in all, I thought it was one terrific bourbon. I recommend it for special occasions, like when your wife gets her PhD, or nights when you’re not the designated driver. [...]
